Producer Explains Why Dwayne Johnson Decided to Play Black Adam for DC Comics

Black Adam (and Shazam!) Producer Hiram Garcia explains why Dwayne Johnson is the perfect actor to bring the DC villain to life. Garcia is the president of productions for Dany Garcia and Johnson’s Seven Bucks Production, which produced several of The Rock’s most notable films, including Baywatch, Furious 7, Fate of the Furious, Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle and Rampage.

Johnson’s Black Adam would debut in Shazam by David F. Sandberg, with many who believe he would play the primary antagonist of the film against the titular character of Zachary Levi. But in the end the situation changed with the upcoming film in which now another villain in Doctor Sivana is played by Mark Strong. At another point in time, it was also said that Black Adam was introduced in Suicide Squad 2, but that does not seem to be the case, especially as the sequel has apparently been delayed.

Despite the absence of an official update from Warner Bros., Garcia assures the audience that the project is moving smoothly behind the scenes. In a new interview with Collider he told how Johnson set himself up for the superhero villain as his first step in the popular genre. According to the producer, Johnson had been looking for a long time to submerge his toes in superhero movies, which meant that a lot of thought was given to his decision to eventually play the DC bad guy.

“Black Adam is definitely happening, we’re really very deep in a script that’s going very well, I’m very excited about the story we’ve made … Look, I’ve always been a big fan of comic strip characters. this dream always had, I’ve always wanted to – You know, you have kind of these goals like: ‘One day I would like to do this and like to do this’ and making a superhero movie was certainly always one of my dreams. you know you have this living superhero in Dwayne Johnson for the longest time, so I always tried to find out what the perfect character is that suits him and his looks, his style and his kind of edge and posture.

“Black Adam has just gotten a good feeling. It was this kind of really cool antihero, kicks ass, who believes in fundamentally demanding justice on his way with a fascinating background story, the history he has regarding being a former slave and freeing his people and then getting it of his abilities and what happened from there. So I threw that early in Dwayne and he loved the idea, and we kept it as little as possible in our minds. We had a great conversation with Warner Brothers once every so many years, and we all insisted that this was our character. ”

Unfortunately, apart from the confirmation that the Black Adam is still standalone, the timeframe for the possible release is still unclear. Films that are under development can be demolished if things do not work well. In the meantime, it can also remain in development for years, especially if it is not necessary to roll it out. Only when a project goes into production can people have a good idea of when it will arrive in cinemas.

From the moment Warner Bros. have and DC Films four films on the role (Aquaman, Shazam !, Joker and Wonder Woman 1984) and they will all be released before 2020. There are also a lot of projects at different stages of development, such as Matt Reeves’ The Batman, The Flash Standalone, Birds of Prey, Suicide Squad 2, Green Lantern Corps and Nightwing, others are all waiting for their respective release dates. Granted, Black Adam does not develop as far as in some of the aforementioned films, which means it can take longer to actually see it on the big screen; unless, of course, the studio decides to follow it quickly.

While fans have to wait a while before they initially think Black Adam would make its debut in the DCEU, Johnson remains attached to Shazam! just in a different way – as an executive producer. And maybe if people react well to the first film, the sequel could finally be the hero who goes against the nasty character of the actor.
